An estimate using 2026 federal and Michigan tax tables, last verified 2026-08-28. Detroit, Grand Rapids and 22 other Michigan cities levy a local income tax of about 1% for residents. Not included here. Your actual check also depends on how your employer processes your W-4 and your benefit elections.

How to Use the Michigan Paycheck Calculator

Enter what you earn

Type your salary and choose whether that figure is annual or hourly. The calculator recalculates as you type — there is no submit button.

Pick how often you are paid

Weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly. This decides how the annual tax is spread across your cheques, and bi-weekly is 26 cheques a year rather than 24.

Choose your filing status

Single, married filing jointly, or head of household. This sets both your federal standard deduction and which bracket table applies, and for Michigan it can widen the state brackets too.

Add deductions if they apply

Open the optional row to enter a 401(k) percentage, annual health premiums, children under 17 and any extra withholding from your W-4. Most people can leave these alone.

How Michigan taxes your paycheck

Michigan charges a single flat rate of 4.25% on taxable wages, so your state marginal rate does not change as you earn more. Michigan allows a personal exemption of $5,900 rather than a standard deduction.

Federal withholding is the larger deduction for most people. It runs on the 2026 brackets after your standard deduction — $16,100 for a single filer, $32,200 filing jointly — and is reduced by $2,000 for each qualifying child you claim on your W-4. On top of that, Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare takes 1.45% with no cap.

One thing this calculator cannot do for you: detroit, Grand Rapids and 22 other Michigan cities levy a local income tax of about 1% for residents. Not included here. Check your city or county rate and treat the number above as your ceiling.

A note on 401(k) contributions, because most calculators get this wrong: money you defer into a traditional 401(k) lowers your income tax but not your Social Security or Medicare tax. Pre-tax health premiums lower both.

Frequently asked questions

How much is taken out of my paycheck in Michigan?

In Michigan you pay federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, and Michigan state income tax of 4.25% flat. For a typical single filer earning $65,000, total withholding usually lands between 20% and 27% of gross pay.

Does Michigan have a state income tax?

Yes. Michigan charges a flat 4.25% on taxable income, so everyone pays the same rate regardless of what they earn.

Why is my actual paycheck different from this estimate?

The three usual reasons are the W-4 on file with your employer, benefit deductions this calculator does not know about, and local taxes. Employers also use IRS withholding tables that annualise each individual cheque, so a month with a bonus or overtime can be withheld at a higher rate and then settle up when you file.

How do I increase my take-home pay?

The lever most people have is the W-4. If you get a large refund every year you are over-withholding, and adjusting step 3 or step 4(b) puts that money in each cheque instead. Beyond that, pre-tax health premiums and an HSA reduce both income tax and FICA, which a 401(k) contribution does not.

Are there local income taxes in Michigan?

Detroit, Grand Rapids and 22 other Michigan cities levy a local income tax of about 1% for residents. Not included here. This calculator covers federal, FICA and state tax only, so if you live or work somewhere with a local levy your real take-home pay will be slightly lower than the figure shown.
